SSOL Schroth Certification Courses

SSOL, through its pathway to certification as an SSOL Schroth Physical Therapist and then as an SSOL Schroth Advanced Physical Therapist, seeks to train physical therapists worldwide in a proven method of physical therapy for the conservative treatment of scoliosis and other spinal conditions.

In recognition of the international need for qualified professionals to treat individuals with scoliosis and other spinal conditions, SSOL employs a broad approach to educating and training qualified physical therapists and maintains the highest professional standards in recruiting and training its teachers to educate these PTs.

SSOL operates on a core belief that the lifeblood of any organization is the inclusion of new individuals who will bring fresh ideas and energy, thereby promoting the organization’s vitality and growth. That growth must be calibrated to the needs of the scoliosis community and in particular the needs of individuals with scoliosis and other spinal conditions.

The Lyon Method Certification Course
with Dr. Jean-Claude de Mauroy, MD

Dr. Jean-Claude de Mauroy teaches his Lyon Method for orthopaedic non-surgical treatment of scoliosis and other vertebral deviations on the SSOL platform.  This course gets back to basics as de Mauroy engages in classic face-to-face training with his students over two and a half days.

The course is intended for all those who want to acquire specialized knowledge in the field of vertebral deviation treatment and understand the physiopathological and biomechanical basis of these treatments.

By the end of the course, students should be able to analyze each pathological situation and develop the most appropriate therapeutic management.  It is not a question of simply imitating exercises but of acquiring the necessary skills to choose the most suitable exercise or construct the most appropriate brace.

Oprtimizing surgical outcomes in ASD through individualized medicine and precise patient selection

Presenter: Dr Ferran Pellisé was trained as an orthopedic surgeon at the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital in Barcelona

Adult spinal deformity (ASD) is a complex and heterogeneous disease that can severely impact patients’ lives. While surgical correction can achieve significant improvement of spinopelvic parameters and quality of life measures in adults with spinal deformity, there remains a high risk of complication associated with surgical approaches to adult deformity. Over the past decade, utilization of surgical correction for ASD has increased dramatically as deformity correction techniques have become more refined and widely adopted. Along with this increase in surgical utilization, there has been a massive undertaking by spine surgeons to develop more robust models to predict postoperative outcomes to mitigate the relatively high complication rates. A large part of this revolution within spine surgery has been the gradual adoption of predictive analytics harnessing artificial intelligence using machine learning algorithms. The development of predictive models to accurately prognosticate patient outcomes following ASD surgery represents a dramatic improvement. Individualized medicine in the field of ASD shall improve patient care, by empowering both patients and surgeons to more specifically tailor clinical decisions to address individual health profiles and needs.

Momentum Spine, an AI mobile app for 3D assessment of Scoliosis with a smartphone video.

Special Webinar to meet the team of Momentum Health

Dr. Jean Ouellet, Philippe Miller and Evan Dimentberg

Be the first to learn about the leatest tool which can monitor scoliosis curve progression. Momentum Health is an FDA Cleared mobile platform for remotely monitoring and screening for scoliosis using a smartphone video. The app uses a 45 second video taken on any phone at home or in clinic to create a photo-realistic 3D Model of the patient's body and using AI can predict the maximum Cobb Angle and assess other key metrics automatically.

It was started by Dr. Jean Ouellet and a masters student in Montreal where they validated it at St. Justine with Dr. Parent. They have been backed by the AO Foundation as their partner.

Who can control spinal shape, spinal loading, and growth?

Did you miss it?

Presenter: Ian A.F. Stokes
While scoliosis may have known and unknown cause, the pattern of progression of scoliosis during rapid adolescent growth appears very similar.  So this webinar will explore the evidence that asymmetrical growth of the spine (progressive scoliosis) responds in part to imposed loading.  That loading depends on gravity, activity, and the forces in muscles and other surrounding tissues.  So is asymmetry of the spine (scoliosis) inevitably associated with asymmetrical loading?  Does asymmetrical loading result in asymmetrical growth and resulting progression of scoliosis?  This webinar will explore the evidence, and ask whether patients, therapists and others can influence the spinal loading and growth, and hence the outcome.

Theodoor Smit is professor of Translational Regenerative Medicine at Amsterdam University Medical Centers (Amsterdam UMC), Amsterdam, Netherlands.

He obtained a MSc in Mechanical Engineering at TU Delft, Netherlands, and a PhD in Biomechanical Engineering at Technical University Hamburg-Harburg, Germany, in 1996. His interdisciplinary research focuses on the role of mechanics in biology, more particular the mechanobiology of development and disease. The etiology of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, more precisely: the mechanical origin of scoliotic deformities, has been a major research theme throughout his career. The long-term clinical goal of his research is to develop implants to provide temporary mechanical support with degradable polymers, so that tissues can regenerate and heal in a proper way after trauma and disease. Smit received various prestigious research grants from government as well as industry. In 2011, he spent a sabbatical year at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University in Boston. Smit published 178 papers in international peer reviewed journals and supervised 30 PhD students in medicine, engineering, biology and physics.

Tangled in the Curves-Real Life with Idiopathic Scoliosis and Physiotherapy Scoliosis Specific Exercises (PSSE)

Presenter: Caroline Bell

Tangled in the Curves - Real Life with Idiopathic Scoliosis author, researcher, and spinal fusion patient, Caroline Bell spent over 15 years on a constant quest for information and pain relief (finding neither) for her scoliosis. After being treated by multiple non scoliosis-trained physical therapists, hear her first-hand account of the physical and mental benefits experienced when she finally found scoliosis-specific physiotherapy!
Her adventure discovering PSSE is also detailed in this new relatable non-fiction book, amidst the full display of what living with scoliosis feels like - from diagnosis, bracing, surgery, and beyond. Tangled in the Curves aims to bring instant support to scoliosis patients and families by presenting stories, tips, and learnings compiled from scoliosis patients' journeys in plain language. It celebrates the strength and resilience of everybody with scoliosis curves, while showcasing just how challenging it can be. You are not alone with scoliosis and can untangle a part of your curvy journey!

Safe Fitness Exercise Choices for Adults with Spinal Disorders and Pain: An Algorithm and Proposed Guidelines

Presenter: Lise Stolze, MPT, DSc, CSCS

SSOL Schroth Educator, BSPTS C2 and SEAS Scoliosis Certified, Polestar Pilates Educator
Adult Spinal Disorder (ASD), including scoliosis and hyper-kyphosis is of growing interest in health care because of its prevalence in a population that has expanded due to increased longevity. This population is at risk for progression resulting in pain and disability. A physical examination focusing on gait, posture and movement competence is combined with radiographical assessment to obtain risk stratification indicators for optimal treatment planning that includes fitness exercises. Fitness exercise has shown to improve muscle mass and strength, which tends to decrease in older adults. Research on exercise guidelines for people with ASD has focused mostly on Physiotherapy Scoliosis Specific Exercise (PSSE), and not on exercise for fitness. Fitness exercise guidelines for those with ASD would benefit this population and the fitness trainers who coach them.

This webinar presents best practice fitness exercise guidelines for people with ASD and pain, based on risk assessment and movement competence. A consensus from experts on physical therapy and ASD provides a theoretical framework and algorithm to help guide safe fitness exercise choices for this population.
